As Hugh Grant’s character rightly said Love actually in 2003, “We are surrounded by love”. This Valentine’s Day, you might want to get in the spirit. As a couple, single, “it’s complicated”, whatever! Love is not necessarily romantic. It can take different forms and can be found in your family or even in friendly relationships. So love can also be platonic and just as rewarding.

If you’re looking for a series that’s about love in the broadest sense, you’ve come to the right place. In this special Valentine’s Day selection, we have selected series that talk about love, no matter what form it takes. So that everyone can find something for themselves. Here are 6 series where love comes first. Obviously, this is a subjective and non-exhaustive list. For anyone who prefers feature films, our selection of the 5 must-see films for Valentine’s Day is worth reading only here.

Normal People (2020)

Inspired by Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name, Normal people is a series that perfectly manages to capture the complexity of romantic relationships in our time. Marianne and Connell come from a small town in the west of Ireland and attend the same high school. He is intelligent, athletic and popular with his comrades. She’s just as brilliant, but she’s lonely, withdrawn, intimidating, harassed. He comes from a working class background, she from a wealthy background. Connell’s mother takes care of the housework for Marianne’s family.

Although the two protagonists are distant in every way, a special connection develops between them. The series invites us to delve into their multi-year relationship, from high school to their life as young adults at university. They find each other, lose each other, find each other again, and so on… Over time, the dynamics of their relationship evolve and even reverse.

Normal people is notable for the complexity of its characters and the authenticity of the romantic relationship between Connell and Marianne. Mental health is a major theme in the series, as is communication. Far from stereotypes and clichés, Normal people shows us a turbulent but authentic love affair.

Poignantly, Normal people is worn by Paul Mescal (After sun) and Daisy Edgar Jones (Where the crabs sing). The two actors show exceptional performances and strengthen the series. Their chemistry shines through the screen.

Normal people can be purchased or rented on CANAL+ and Prime Video. You can expect twelve episodes of around thirty minutes each that will touch your heart.

The Wonderful Friend (2018)

There is also a lot of love between friends. Adapted from the saga The wonderful friend Written by Elena Ferrante, the series follows the close and strong friendship between Elena Greco and Raffaella Cerullo. When the woman she has called Lila for decades appears to have disappeared without a trace, Elena begins to write the story of their friendship, which begins in the poor neighborhoods of Naples in the 1950s.

The two little girls are brilliant, but their fates are completely different. Firstly, Lenù (Elena) will be able to continue her studies, which is rare in this environment at this time. The other, Lila (Raffaella), won’t be so lucky. Over the years, Lenù and Lila evolve. Just like their extremely strong friendship and their ambivalent feelings, sometimes with a touch of rivalry. Currently 3 seasons of The wonderful friend are available on CANAL+. A fourth season, adapting the fourth and final volume of the saga, is expected in the coming months. Strong!
