You definitely know it FR-Alert, this functionality allows you to warn the population by telephone and to disseminate the instructions to be followed in the event of a major danger (natural, sanitary, terrorist, industrial, etc.). It is triggered directly by the prefect’s decision and has already been applied in France. Last January, the system warned residents of Reunion Island in particular of the passing of Cyclone Belal.

FR Alert exercises are ongoing (and will follow) in Paris

Today the prefecture wanted to confirm that the same FR-Alert device is being tested to raise awareness among the Parisian population of this method of distribution, which complements the already known alarm systems (sirens, information disseminated in the media, on the official websites…).

Specifically, this results in an unusual noise and a previously unknown notification appearing on your mobile phone. This allows everyone in a defined area to be informed of danger, even if their phone is on silent.

The prefecture specifies: “Since this is an exercise, no special measures are expected.“The message displayed on the screen also makes it clear that this is a simple exercise. So don’t panic.

Planned tests of the telephone alarm system:

  • Thursday, February 15, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., in the 13th arrondissement
  • Friday March 22nd, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., in the 15th arrondissement
  • Tuesday, April 23, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., in the 17th arrondissement

Obviously, the real principle of FR-Alert is to be able to reach (almost) every smartphone owner, regardless of the operator, the phone model or the type of network used (3G, 4G, 5G, etc.).

The exercises are apparently related to the preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games, which will take place in Paris in a few months.
